Rear Coilover, Remove & Replace
Remove
- Remove the trunk floor carpet
- Remove the carpet trim panels in the trunk (use a trim removal tool to remove the pop clips)
- Remove the foam inserts on the left and right side of the trunk floor. One solid tug upward should release the single plastic clip.
- Remove rear wheels
- Remove stabilizer link end link to rear lower control arm (RLCA) bolt (1 per side)
- Remove the strut to RLCA bolt (1 per side)
- Remove the hub to RLCA bolt (1 per side)
- Back in the trunk, remove the two nuts holding the each strut in place
- Note the orientation of the springs, as you will want to reinstall them the same way. With stock springs, the LHS spring bottom (touching the spring perch) ends toward the rear of the vehicle and the RHS ends toward the front of the vehicle. The dots on the springs face the centerline of the vehicle.
- Remove the coilovers
If you have trouble removing the coilover, you can also remove the bolt connecting the control arm to the subframe.
Replace
General guidance:
- Insert the RLCA bolts from the front of the vehicle so the nuts are applied from the rear
- While holding the bolt side, tighten the nut to the specified torque (do not tighten from the bolt side)
- Tighten all bolts with rubber bushings with the vehicle at normal ride height to reduce bushing stress
- Ensure that the coilover assembly is oriented correctly (for stock struts, the dots on the springs face toward the centerline of the vehicle)
- Insert coilover and tighten the top top nuts on each coilover. Torque to spec.
- Hand tighten RLCA to hub
- Hand tighten RLCA to strut
- Hand tighten RLCA to subframe
- Lower the car (ideally onto ramps) and torque all RLCA bolts to spec
